UK-based Spaceflux, Raises €6.1 Million to Scale Satellite-Tracking Network
London-headquartered space startup, Spaceflux, has raised £5.4 million ($7.31 million) in seed funding to expand its global telescope network and accelerate the development of AI-powered space situational awareness solutions. The funding round, announced on July 25, was co-led by the UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund (managed by Future Planet Capital), Foresight Group, and Blackfinch Ventures.
Founded in 2022, Spaceflux specializes in space surveillance and tracking using AI analytics and advanced optical sensors to monitor satellites and debris across all orbital regimes, utilizing both visible and short-wave infrared (SWIR) imaging. This technology enables the tracking and characterization of space objects during daylight hours, extending observation capabilities beyond traditional night-time operations to 24 hours per day. By leveraging proprietary AI-driven analytics and advanced optical sensor systems, Spaceflux aspires to establish itself as a leading provider in the space surveillance and tracking sector.
Currently, Spaceflux delivers data and insights on Geostationary Orbit activities to the UK Space Agency and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). Increasing reliance on satellite navigation systems has drawn attention to potential economic impacts, with estimates indicating that a one-week disruption could cost the UK economy approximately €8.7 billion. As congestion in Earth's orbits increases, the need for accurate tracking and collision avoidance is becoming more significant, particularly for space infrastructure supporting navigation, communications, environmental monitoring, and security.
Alex Leigh, Investment Director for Defense & Security at UKI2S (managed by Future Planet Capital), commented: “This investment represents a significant milestone in the integration of defense and space sectors, where dual-use technologies are increasingly vital to the United Kingdom's strategic capabilities. Supported by both the UK Space Agency and MOD, we are pleased to be leading this funding round, which underscores the escalating importance of resilient, space-based infrastructure.”
The recent investment will go towards expanding Spaceflux’s global sensor infrastructure, making adjustments to its Cortex analytics platform, and improving service delivery for customers, such as satellite operators, insurers, and public agencies.
